Rain Plans That Actually Work
There’s something about spring wedding season that keeps you humble. It’s the season of blooms and breezes—and just as often, it’s the season of unexpected downpours. We recently wrapped a wedding weekend that brought its fair share of rain, and I was reminded (once again) how critical preparation is—not just for logistics, but for peace of mind.
So let’s talk about rainy wedding days. Because yes, they happen. And no, they don’t have to ruin a thing.
Start With the Tent: Sidewalls and Flooring Aren’t Optional
The first place I look? The tent. If you're using one, make sure your sidewalls are secured—and understand what kind you're getting. Clear sidewalls create a completely different visual and experience than solid ones.
And flooring? It’s not just a “nice-to-have” when rain is in the forecast. It’s often essential. If the ground is already soggy—or if there’s a risk of flooding—adding flooring means your guests aren’t wading through water to get to their seats. It changes the experience from “We’re surviving this” to “This is still beautiful.”
Wind Changes Everything
When rain brings wind into the mix, things get even more complicated. That’s when you want a tent tech onsite. Having someone there to secure, adjust, and troubleshoot in real time isn’t just convenient—it’s critical. High winds can create safety hazards, and that’s not a variable you want left to chance.
Same goes for sound. Lavalier mics might work beautifully indoors, but in wind? You want a handheld mic—something that stays close to the speaker’s mouth and doesn’t cut in and out when a gust picks up mid-vows.
Create Buffer Time With a Backup Ceremony Setup
This one’s more strategic. If the weather forecast is touch-and-go, I always advise creating a secondary ceremony setup—even if you don’t end up using it. Having an alternate location allows you to buy time before making a final decision, and that flexibility matters. It keeps everyone calm and lets you pivot gracefully instead of scrambling at the last minute.
It’s about giving yourself options, not pressure.
Rain doesn’t have to be a spoiler. In fact, with the right preparation, it becomes just another element of the story—something your guests remember not for the chaos it caused, but for how well it was handled.
