Magi Fisher
There’s something alluring about Magi Fisher. Maybe it’s the way she seamlessly moves between wedding weekends in Aspen and high-stakes NDA negotiations. Or maybe it’s the fact that her resume reads like two aspirational careers stitched into one—luxury wedding photographer and licensed attorney.
On this week’s episode of The Wine and Dine Me Podcast, I sat down with Magi to explore the legal underbelly of the creative industry—the conversations we know we should be having, but often don’t until it’s too late.
Because here’s the truth no one tells you when you’re designing your dream business: beauty and vision will get you noticed, but it’s the contracts and systems that protect your future.

A Tale of Two Industries (in One Woman)
Magi didn’t just study law—she lived it. And while most creatives were dodging legal lingo, she was creating contract templates tailored for artists, photographers, and planners who wanted more than the basic boilerplate. Her legal business, The Artist Lawyer, was born out of one simple idea: creative entrepreneurs deserve sophisticated protection.
We talked about her own fork-in-the-road moment—choosing between a high-powered legal career and her booming photography business—and why she ultimately built something that honors both sides of her brain.
Your Contract Isn’t Just a Formality—It’s a Shield
COVID-19 was a wake-up call for the industry. Cancellations, postponements, force majeure—terms that once felt theoretical became painfully real. “A lot of people finally looked at their contracts,” Magi said. “And they realized they weren’t protected.”
And she’s not just talking about weddings. Global tariffs. Vendor liability. Intellectual property. If you don’t have contracts in place that address these things, you’re gambling with your business.
The Legal Checklist Every Creative Needs
Whether you're onboarding a new team member or handling a high-profile NDA client, there are key areas most creatives miss:
Trademark your business name early (before someone else does).
Classify contractors and employees correctly—and get it in writing.
Use NDAs with discernment, not fear—and consider charging a premium when you lose visibility.
Build relationships with your legal team before you’re in crisis.
And if you're managing NDAs for clients? Magi urges planners to consider adding an “NDA management fee.” Document wrangling, vendor coordination, legal compliance—it’s work. It’s valuable. And it should be compensated.
Clear is Kind, Contracts are Kindness
Perhaps the most refreshing takeaway from this episode was that legality doesn’t have to be intimidating—it can be empowering. “Clear is kind,” as we both agreed. And when you’re clear about your expectations, your protections, and your value? That’s when your business becomes truly sustainable.
Because in this world of polished visuals and curated experiences, protection is the most sophisticated thing you can offer your brand.
